Living in The Junction, Toronto
In the early 1900s, this portion of Old Toronto was known primarily because of the fact that it was located near the West Toronto Diamond, a place where four railway lines met, hence the name, “The Junction.” The region was heavily industrialized, and there were many foundries, mills, meat processing, and factories in the area. For many years, the area had a reputation for being a wild, debauch part of the city, and this resulted in the banning of alcohol sales in this neighborhood. It wasn’t until 1998 that this changed, and since then, The Junction has been the place for beer lovers to congregate.
The small area is home to half a dozen craft breweries. Whether your palette leans towards a crisp Kolsch or a dark porter, you’ll be sure to find a brew that impresses you in this neighbourhood. All activity revolves around Dundas Street in this neighbourhood. In addition to distilleries and coffee shops, you will also find a fantastic diversity of restaurants. Whether you have a hankering for an Indian curry or an Italian pizza, you won’t have any trouble finding something to eat on this street.
In the northern section of this community, near St. Clair Avenue, residents will find a variety of box stores that can serve their day-to-day needs. A Walmart, Canadian Tire, Michaels, Home Depot, Best Buy, RONA, and Staples can all be found within this neighbourhood.
Runnymede Park is a popular recreation area in the north end of The Junction. There, you will find the George Bell Arena, a popular place to enjoy a hockey game or an evening skate. The park also includes a:
- Baseball diamond
- Tennis courts
- Children’s playground
- Multi-purpose sports field
- Wading pool
When it comes to education, the Annette Street Junior and Senior Public School and Humberside Collegiate Institute are to the immediate south of this neighbourhood. Many residents of The Junction can easily walk to school.
