Living in Leaside, Toronto

The Toronto neighbourhood of Leaside spans little more than three square kilometres; yet it has a rich and interesting history. For many years, the area that would eventually become Leaside was used for farming. The land was owned by the Lea family, but it wasn’t until they built a large octagonal building that the community earned its name. The house was intended to be a residence and court house, and it was given the name “Leaside.”

After being in the Lea family for many years, the land was sold to the Canadian Pacific Railway who decided to put a maintenance stop there. Following the creation of this railway stop, the area’s popularity increased. The railway company established a small community of houses for their employees, and even today many of the streets bear the name of important railway officials. In the years of the First World War, Canada Wire and Cable joined the community and attracted many working families for the years when the company produced munitions. Many residential homes were built at this time to house these families.

Geographically, the community of Leaside is unique. Glaciers have shaped the land into an almost perfectly flat plateau. The area is bordered on three sides by valleys with rivers. For residents of Leaside this means that there are a multitude of opportunities for outdoor recreation. To the north, residents can make use of Serena Gundy Park, Wilket Creek Park, Sherwood Park, or Sunnybrook Park. To the south, Trace Manes Park is a great option.

Serena Gundy Park spans more than sixty acres and includes a great system of trails that can be used for nature walks in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. Trace Manes Park includes a wide variety of facilities including:

  • Six tennis courts
  • Children’s playground
  • Baseball diamond
  • Outdoor skating rink

Leaside is a great option for families that have young children. The area is under the care of the Toronto District School Board. Schools in the area include:

  • Northlea Elementary and Middle School (Kindergarten - Grade 8)
  • Bessborough Elementary and Middle School (Kindergarten - Grade 8)
  • Rolph Road Elementary School (Kindergarten - Grade 6)
  • Rolph Road Elementary School (Kindergarten - Grade 6)
  • Leaside High School (Grade 9 - Grade 12)

Northlea Elementary and Middle School has over 800 students and tends to attract children from neighboring communities because it is a dual track school that offers instruction in both English and French.
