Explore Greater Toronto Area Real Estate
Toronto homes for sale offer a wide range of property options from more affordable single-family detached homes as you move further away from the city centre to luxurious condos and estate properties closer to the downtown core. Condos and townhomes are a favourite for first-time buyers as most of them can find something that fits their needs and budget, as long as they are willing to factor in a commute for work.
The downtown area of Toronto has primarily condos given the density of the city centre. An affordable condo can be found with about 500 square feet of living space, 0-1 bedroom, and 1 bathroom. More established condo complexes may have larger square footage and with a few renovations could look like some of the units in the new modern high-rise towers. Condos in the downtown core are all about having a pedestrian lifestyle without the hassle of commuting to work every day.
Durham is where communities such as Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa are located, which border Lake Ontario. Here you'll find detached homes that are comparably priced to some 1-2 bedroom condos in the downtown core. As with most cities, the further out you go the more bang you get for your buck. With roads such as Highway 401 and the Express Toll Route known as Highway 407, you'll find there are many ways to get you into the city centre.
Halton is the furthest community on the western end of the GTA. Here you'll find the communities of Burlington and Oakville, which are great commuter areas into the city of Toronto. Affordable condo high-rise towers, fantastic townhouse complexes and more affordable single-family homes can be found in this part of the GTA. There are also a number of luxurious homes that line Lake Ontario, with stunning views.
Peel borders Toronto and York to the east and Halton to the west. The more well-known communities of Mississauga and Brampton reside in the Peel region of the GTA. Mississauga has numerous high-rise condo towers that offer you more space than a comparable unit in the city centre. It also offers one of the shorter commutes to work if your job is in the city centre.
York is an area known for its full range of businesses from manufacturing/automotive to high-tech to agricultural. Homes in the area also have a range from high-rise towers to acreages depending on how far out you are from the city centre. As well, some of the most expensive city homes are located within the York region.
Living in the Greater Toronto Area
One of the first questions that many people ask about living in this area is how easy it is to get around via transit. The GO Transit system is an extensive system of buses and trains that gets you where you need to go fast. With regularly scheduled times in and out of the city centre, you'll be able to live where you want and still be able to find transit options.
The city centre has numerous shopping malls and restaurants to keep everyone happy. The surrounding communities also have their fair share of amenities that are convenient to many of the homeowners in the area. You won't have to go far for your groceries or to find a mall for your other shopping needs.
